Zhang Zhehan releases an English breakup song; the Chinese translation of ‘了’ carries hidden meanings

Reporter Xu Yiqun / Taipei Report

Artist Zhang Zhehan recently released a new single titled “Going Off 了,” once again attempting to sing entirely in English. Using his soft and magnetic voice, he portrays the inner feelings of loss and struggle after the end of a relationship. In the first half of the song, the delicate and touching melody leads listeners into a quiet place deep within their emotions. As the segments progress, the intensity and emotion rise, ultimately culminating in a bright and carefree acceptance of the ending at the song’s conclusion.

Artist Zhang Zhehan recently released a new single titled “Going Off 了.”

Zhang Zhehan chose this song without much hesitation when he first heard the demo. Although this is not his first English song, he made extra efforts to master the pronunciation and emotional expression. He would carry the lyrics sheet and work hard to match the most appropriate enunciation. He also used his free time to practice and sing along with a guitar, ensuring he could fully immerse himself in the song’s emotions.

Speaking about why he chose “了” as the Chinese title for “Going Off,” Zhang Zhehan explained his thoughts and understanding. He said, “The character ‘了,’ when pronounced ‘liǎo,’ means end or conclusion, symbolizing the end of a story or relationship. When pronounced ‘le,’ it often serves as a mood particle, indicating an acceptance or notification of a situation or result, thus implying a forced farewell to the past.”

Zhang Zhehan recently concluded two performances in Australia.

In addition to continually releasing music, Zhang Zhehan recently concluded two performances in Australia with great success. This trip took him to Melbourne and Sydney, where his adept singing and interactions with the live audience brought the atmosphere to a peak. In the final segment of the performance, he appeared in a preppy style, as if turning back time, allowing the audience to revisit the youthful memories of school days.

Zhang Zhehan’s musical journey continues, as he is set to hold his first solo concert in Korea this November. The event is expected to attract numerous fans from Korea and across Asia. He will bring an emotional and resonant music feast, featuring performances of “Going Off” and other classic works.
